There are many new smartphones already out and on its way this holiday season.
Some of the popular ones always mentioned are Samsung's Galaxy S3 and Apple's iPhone 5, which are already on the market. Although Apple is dominating in just about everywhere, Samsung seems to be the one to beat.
The Galaxy S3 may get some unwanted competition from the new LG Optimus G.
The G comes with a Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5 Ghz Quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a 4.7-inch display with Zerogap touch with true HD IPS plus, and 4G LTE connectivity. It features a 2,100 mAh battery and 32GB of totally memory (16GB built in memory and 16GB microSD card), and support for up to 64 GB of expandable memory. It has a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and a 8.0 megapixel rear-facing camera. It runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
Some key features are QSlide, which allows users to Perform two functions simultaneously on the same screen (ex. watch a movie and reply to a text) and Live Zooming , which allows users to Zoom in/out on videos during playback.
The Galaxy S3 has a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display with NFC technology. It has a 8 megapixel read-facing camera and 1.9 MP front-facing camera. It has a 2,100 mAh battery and runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with a 1.5 Ghz Advanced Dual Core Qualcomm processor. It has 2GB of RAM and can hold up to 64GB microSD.
LG showed how the G has better battery life than the S3 in comparison shots.
According to TechnoBloom, the tests performed by LG show that the Optimus G outlasted the Samsung Galaxy S3 in some real world usage aspects. The LG Optimus G lasted 7 hrs and 52 min while playing a video non-stop while in airplane mode. In the same test, the Galaxy S3 lasted for only 7 hrs and 15 min.
"While recording video, the Optimus G took 7 hrs and 1 min before the battery hit 15% capacity. On the same note, the Galaxy S3 lasted a mere 6 hrs and 46 min before it hit the 15% capacity mark," the review said. "Talk time was apparently measured on LTE networks, where the Optimus G lasted 15 hrs and 51 min of non-stop calling, while the Galaxy S3 stopped at 9 hrs and 39 min."
Other reviews show that the LG Optimus G may give the S3 a run for its money.
"The Optimus G ships with Android 4.0.4 'Ice Cream Sandwich,' which LG pledges to update to Android 4.1 'Jelly Bean' within the coming months. Although Ice Cream Sandwich lacks Google's Project Butter, which smoothes out the entire Android experience, the quad-core processor still makes everything feel fast," PCMag reported.
"When compared to AMOLED and Super AMOLED technology used by Samsung, IPS offers a more natural rendering of colors, while AMOLED and Super AMOLED tends to over-saturates color," UberGizmo writer Eliane Fiolet said. "As a designer, I personally enjoy over-saturation since it enhances the reality, however, I can tell that IPS provides a similar quality and delivers a more 'realistic" style.'"
Mobilemag.com said that "This smartphone is no pushover, and is quite attractive as well. The bad news is that it isn't running Jelly Bean and instead gives us with Android ICS and a custom LG Skin. That being said, the custom skin isn't all that bad."
With a 2-year contract, the Sprint LG Optimus G will retail for $199.99, which is in line with most high-end smartphone launches, with a few exceptions," Ubergizmo said.
AT&T has just announced that the handset will be available on Nov. 2 for $199.99. It will be their first LTE quad-core smartphone. Pre-orders started yesterday (Oct. 16).
Samsung definitely has some competition, but may stay in the lead with upcoming devices such as the Galaxy Note 2 and its Windows Phone 8, the ATIV S.
