iPad Mini Release Date, Rumors, Features: New Leaked Photos Reveal Two Speakers; Will Kindle Fire 2 Compete? [SEE IT NOW]

New leaked photos have hit the web for the iPad Mini.

According to CNET, Chinese Web site digi.163 recently posted photos of the back casing of what it claims is the upcoming iPad Mini. As with previous photos of the iPad Mini's case, the images show an aluminum design that comes with a new 9-pin connector. In addition, the casing appears to show two speakers at the bottom of the device, an Apple logo, and a place for a rear camera.

According to the Christian Post, the pictures first appeared on a Chinese site known as NetEase and the device can be viewed in great detail in both photos. It is said to have originated from OEM, the original equipment manufacturer in Shenzhen, China.

CP reports:

"The opening for Apple's smaller dock connector can be seen in the picture along with a rear camera hole, and the interior lip where the display and front panel will be attached. This back shell in the photo appears to be for the Wi-Fi model since it does not have a cutout area where the SIM card would normally be placed.

The rear shell in the picture features little tapering in comparison to the current iPad model."

PadGadget gives more details:

"Additionally, there are two speakers positioned at the center of the device instead of where the speaker is on the 10-inch iPad. Currently, there is only one speaker on Apple's tablet, and it is positioned in the corner. The two-row design looks distinctly different than the 10-inch iPad.

There is also a hole for the rear-facing camera, as well as holes for the orientation lock (or mute button, depending on your preference), sleep mode button, and volume controls. It is important to note that the volume increase and decrease buttons are separated by the shell. On the 10-inch iPad, the volume controls are a single button with raises at their pushing points."

Many reports said that Apple will hold a special event on Sept. 12 and will release the iPhone 5 on Sept. 21. Earlier reports suggested that Apple will also announce the iPad Mini on the same event, but now new reports suggest that is highly unlikely, and that it will be at a separate event in October.

So where does Amazon's new Kindle Fire 2 fit in?

FOX News reported that the new little iPad tablet "is expected to help Apple fend off cheaper tablets with smaller screens, notably the new Kindle Fire."

CNN Money reported that without a key differentiator from the iPad, Amazon will have to re-think its strategy for battling Apple.

"So far the customer's choice is deciding between high end, Apple, and low end, Amazon," said Aaron Kessler, senior research analyst at Raymond James & Associates. "If Apple releases a price competitive [iPad] Mini, that could completely change the low-end market."

Against Amazon, Don Reisinger, a writer for EWeek, said that the iPad Mini will hurt Amazon and other rival Google, which produced the Nexus 7.

"Kindle Fire and other smaller tablets look awfully boring in comparison," he wrote. "The Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 are great for right now, but the iPad Mini might just hurt them in a big way."

The new Kindle is said to have a 1280 x 800 resolution, different than the current 1024 x 600 display. This will make it sharper and more vibrant. It will be thinner and lighter than the original. This will place it in the category with Google's Nexus 7, which was a huge hit over the summer. Amazon is expected to announce the new Kindle Fire 2 at a special event Thursday, Sept. 6.

Reports say that the iPad Mini will feature a 7.85 inch IGZO display with 330 pixels/inch. It will be more affordable. It is also assumed that the new tablet will feature Apple's upcoming operating system, iO6, which includes a new, Google-free Maps app, and Passbook, and promises better Facebook integration, better maps, and better video conferences that use cellular data, according to Entrepreneur.com. It is also said to have a smaller dock connector and thinner bezel. It may be priced around $249.
