Overdue book fines add up. Margo Reed, a Yonkers, New York resident, will tell you that these fines can in fact add up to a lot of money. Reed was just sentenced to six months in jail for pocketing $163,582 from library borrower's late fees.
From 2004 to 2010, Reed worked for the Yonker's Public Library and steadily collected the money people paid for the overdue books they returned to the library. The stolen money came from the revenue of three Yonkers libraries. Reed, who was working in the business office, claimed a lesser amount for the libraries in the paperwork she was responsible for filling out so that she could keep the difference.
The Westchester District attorney said Reed would have to pay back the full amount that she stole and would be placed on a 4 1/2 year probation. She pleaded guilty to grand larceny and filing a false tax return since for many years she didn't claim the stolen money in her state tax returns.
Before she was fired for embezzlement, Reed's salary at the library was $43,323. The 54-year-old woman was caught after a new business manager was hired by the library and found something odd with the paperwork that Reed was filing.
