A gay couple has decided to follow in the lead of Northstar and Kyle, comic book heroes in X-men. Earlier this month, it was announced that the openly gay hero Northstar in the popular comic book series would marry his long-term love Kyle. In the 51st issue of the comic book, the two fictional characters did finally seal the deal by professing their everlasting love for each other.
Now the Ohio couple, Jason Walker and Scott Everhart, who call themselves "comic book geeks" got married on Wednesday at Midtown Comics, a New York bookstore. The timing of their wedding was scheduled to coincide with the release of the latest issue of X-men, which came out on Wednesday.
It was a full circle for the couple who said their first date was at a comic bookstore.
The owner of the bookstore, Gerry Gladstone, said he was happy to promote tolerance. In fact, the bookstore set out to have a sam-sex wedding at the bookstore and received more than 50 application from same-sex couples. A representative from the comic bookstore said that Walker and Everhart stood out as being die-hard comic book fans.
The couple said they chose New York because Ohio does not allow same-sex weddings. They will have a ceremony for friends and family who could not attend the ceremony in New York. But they did have some famous guests yesterday, including, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.
The New York Times reports that the union of Walker and Everhart has been received positively as has been the marriage of the comic book heroes.
"The comic book community is very welcoming, so this isn't anything out of the ordinary," said Gladstone.
