"Fear the Walking Dead" won't be like "The Walking Dead," whose world is now plagued by walkers that were once normal people that had a life to live. This will be the focus of the spinoff. But if there's one thing these shows have in common, it's that they are all for the characters.

Robert Kirkman, the creator of the comics the shows are based on, said in an update to AMC as picked up by Cleveland.com that like the long-running AMC post-apocalyptic series, the characters will always be the ones on the spotlight.

"It's been the characters, the people of this world that have brought viewers back episode after episode for what is now going on six years," Kirkman said. He added that there will be more people to meet in "Fear the Walking Dead" as the cast keeps on growing, but loss will still be a theme.

"But where the 'exciting' and 'new' come in is that these people have their own experiences and reasons to survive," he explained. "They're complicated, real characters who will not be dealing with the undead the same way," he added.

In "Fear the Walking Dead," the zombies are not a big focus. In fact, viewers will follow the new characters as they attempt to immerse themselves and learn "in a world we LOVE exploring as much as we'd all NEVER want to live there."

Kirkman is confident that all "hearts and guts" will be open as fans welcome the all new cast including Madison, Travis, Alicia, Nick, Liza, Chris, Daniel, Ofelia and others. Fans will be with them during their troubles, which are mostly about family and not zombie-related.

"Fear the Walking Dead" will premiere on Aug. 23. There will only be six episodes for the first season but for the second one AMC ordered, which is already scheduled to premiere next year, there will be 15 installments. This is to fill the year with more zombies it can hold.

"We'll start shooting the first of fifteen episodes for season two sometime in November or December, so I think the plan is to have a zombie TV show on 52 weeks a year," executive producer Greg Nicotero explained via Daily Dead during the San Diego Comic Con.

"In The Walking Dead," he said, "we had six episodes for our first season and I think we did twelve or thirteen in our second season."
