Ever wonder what a Libertarian politician eats? Ron Paul has the answer to this question and he's been sharing it with his supporters in a series of pamphlets for the past 15 years. "The Ron Paul Cookbook" is Ron Paul's "secret weapon" according to his wife Carol. The political duo have come up with some unusual and hokey recipes.
The Wall Street Journal reported on the cookbook and included a video of the Texas congressman's wife making some of her specialties including Easy Oreo Truffles, which are made of cream cheese and crushed Oreo cookies. In the interview, Mrs. Paul says that the cookbook is Libertarian with a small "l" and embodies their political attitude, which does not require excessive spending or great culinary skill but most importantly it is about an American brand of perseverance that includes supermarket staples such as Velveeta and canned fruit.
Carly Okyle reports in Food World News that the book "centers around dishes that can be made by using what's available, saves time. It also - perhaps intentionally, perhaps not - provides a way for the Pauls to keep in touch with their political fan-base. "It means an ongoing connection with Carol and Ron," said Mary Fran Sciulli, a recipe contributor from Columbus, Ohio.
A sampling of the recipes that have fed Ron Paul and his family include such creation as:
The Cherry-Pineapple Dump Cake, made of canned fruit, pie filling and topped with dry cake mix. Then there's a Zippy Olive Beef Spread which is made with wine, onions, cream chees, mayo, olives and beef.
Mrs. Paul concedes that the recipes are not the healthiest but that seems to be the least of her concerns though she has practiced medicine as an obstetrician.
