After the violent and controversial end of the first season of "Outlander," fans are left hanging for more of Jamie and Claire's harrowing escape from the mountains of Scotland. Since the filming of the second season of Starz's hit TV series based on Gabaldon's book has started, here are the top three things that fans of the show can expect to happen next.
Season 2 will feature a new setting.
The end of Season 1 saw Jamie and Claire leaving Scotland for France. In the upcoming season, which will be based on "Dragonfly in Amber," the second book in Gabaldon's "Outlander" series will find the main characters in the middle of a more urban and populated area which is a far cry from the cold and rustic mountains of Scotland.
Speaking to Deadline.com, Ron Moore, the showrunner of the series, talked about the new setting that audiences will see next season.
"It's an urban setting and you're dealing with aristocracy and the court of Louis XV so it's a whole different thing," Moore said. "It's not going to look anything like Season 1, so you're really kind of prepping and shooting a whole new TV show into the second year. It has a lot of, you know, "oh my God, what can we do," those kind of moments to it," he shared.
Season 2 will be more complex.
The new setting will also bring a different set of problems for Jamie and Claire. "You're dealing with a lot more political stuff: conspiracies, lies, deceptions, backbiting, gossip; things happening in Paris salons and dinner parties and soirees. Danger in the streets of Paris is different than those of Scottish highlands," Moore said in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine.
Moore also talked about a historical event that Season 2 will feature. "It takes place in France and it deals with the Jacobite Rebellion," he said. "It's much more political, it weaves in and out of actual historical events. There's more complexity, just in terms of how Diana structured the story in Paris, in particular, as Jamie and Claire try to change history," he explained.
Season 2 will have more changes from the book.
So far, the TV series has been faithful to the source material. However, the finale of Season 1 had some minor changes to create a different suspense from the book. Moore said that fans can expect to see more changes to happen in the next season.
"There will be twists and turns that aren't in the book. The second book is more complex than the first book is. It's a little tougher challenge to adapt it," Moore mentioned. Due to the story's complexity, Moore and the rest of the "Outlander" TV series also talked about the possibility of splitting the novel into two seasons.
"The general plan is probably to try to do a book a season," Moore said. "Some of the books are bigger than others so we've definitely had conversations about, "well, you know, at some point we made need to split a book into two seasons," but right now we're not there yet so the plan is to do "Dragonfly In Amber" for Season 2," he added.
