Superman and Wonder Woman will be sporting new looks this coming June, as the lead super-couple join Batman, the Caped Crusader, in ushering the new era of costumes in DC Comics Universe.
A report on Comic Book Resources on Thursday reveals that Superman and Wonder Woman are set to debut their new duds on the cover of "Action Comics" #41 and "Superman/Wonder Woman" #18, respectively.
Gone is the classic cape and red brief guise, as DC Comics artist Aaron Kuder gives a modern touch to the new era Superman, who now wears a body-fit shirt with a big "S in Diamond" logo on the chest. Kuder's clean-cut Clark Kent pays homage to Superman's version of Grant Morrison and Regs Morales in 2012.
Also, the modern day Clark shows some shade of vulnerability with cloth wrapped around both fists and soaked in red blood. According to Comic Book Resources, the bleeding Superman only suggests a period of struggle as he tries to hold his own ground under a state of powerlessness.
On the other hand, Wonder Woman, the Amazon champion, will no longer appear in a scanty dress as she adapts a modernistic costumes that depicts striking resemblance to Marvel Comics' Captain America (because of the Patriotic Stars) and Iron Man's battle suit.
Kotaku writer Evan Narcisse gives a mixed review of Wonder Woman's transition from a pantsless Goddess to neo-female warrior with sharp blades mounted in both arms, saying that he quite likes the idea of a beastlier Amazon warrior.
"In the past, there've been a whole bunch of variations on Wonder Woman's semi-patriotic theme, but this is a pretty radical departure that covers her up a lot more. Wonder Woman's legwear has been the source of controversy before, most recently when her New 52 costume went from having pants to pantsless.
"The upcoming armor also seems more in line with her new status as the God of War in DC's greco-roman pantheon and its blades hint at a potentially more violent characterization for Diana," wrote Narcisse.
