Petition to Allow Welsh Language eBooks on Amazon's Kindle Gets over 2,000 Signatures

A petition asking Amazon to allow Welsh language eBooks on its Kindle e-reader devices has received over 2,000 signatures.

Publisher Y Lolfa was disappointed to discover that Amazon's Kindle e-readers didn't support eBooks in the Welsh language format. Therefore, the west Wales-based publisher launched a petition earlier this week in an attempt to persuade Amazon to publish Welsh-language books.

As on Friday night, the petition had already received 2,043 signatures and many more are expected to be coming in. Weather presenter Sian Lloyd took to his Twitter account to express his support for  Y Lolfa's campaign, tweeting:  "This is bonkers stuff Amazon! Wrong on every level, including commercially. Do reconsider pronto."

Y Lolfa's managing director, Garmon Gruffudd, said he was glad to see so many supporters and was encouraged by the number of signatures the petition had already received.

"It's been great to get so many people on board. It's far exceeded our expectations," he said. "Hopefully we'll get some more well-known people to sign. The plan is to get as many signatures as possible and then take it to Amazon and hope that they reconsider their stance."

In the past, the publisher has published many Welsh books on the Kindle but has had to list them as English books as Amazon stated that Welsh is an unsupported language on their devices.

Y Lolfa has more than 60 titled available on Kindle but according to Amazon's statement about the language, no new titles can be added. A spokesperson for Amazon said: "We are working on adding more languages through our KDP portal all the time and Welsh is one that we hope to support in the future."
