Photographer Kevin Davies has written a new book about Irish milliner Philip Treacy and his hats, and has titled the book after him.
Irish milliner Philip Treacy created waves throughout the world in 2011 when he created 36 different hats for the royal wedding. Treacy was born in a village in Ireland which had 500 people and was one among eight children in his family. Treacy reveals that he was interested in fashion from a very young age.
"I was just, as a child, very different from the others, and didn't really care what they thought because you know, a child doesn't really have inhibitions, you sort of gain your inhibitions later," says Treacy, who used feathers from his mother's chickens in his earliest designs. "But I was interested in everything that everybody was not interested in."
After taking the world by storm, Treacy and his hats have made it as the main subject of photographer Kevin Davies' new book "Philip Treacy".
Treacy says that visiting him to order a hat is similar to visiting a psychiatrist, only customers are not aware of it. Treacy also says that the famous American Baseball hat is his all time favorite.
According to Treacy, the meaning of wearing a hat has changed over the years. Previously, it was a "conformist accessory", but now hats have become "an accessory of rebellion." He says young people like wearing hats because they like wearing something their parents are not interested in.
He reveals that what fascinated him most about designing hats for the royal wedding was the fact that it was for real people and not models. He says that he was aware that all the people wearing his hats were going to the same event, so he had to be extra careful to see that no two hats were the same, in terms of color, design and style.
Treacy also reveals that he's never made a hat for his mother as she likes to design her own hats.
