Ryan Reynolds Hails 'Logan' as the “Greatest Comic-Book Adaptation Ever Made”

Ryan Reynolds recently stirred up the perennial debate over the best comic book movie ever made, highlighting James Mangold's "Logan" as potentially "the greatest comic-book adaptation ever."

Impacts of 'Deadpool' and 'Logan' on Superhero Films

In an interview with Total Film for their extensive coverage of the third "Deadpool" installment, Reynolds highlighted how both characters' films - "Deadpool" in 2016 and Hugh Jackman's "Logan" in 2017 - brought distinctiveness to the superhero genre amidst a landscape dominated by blockbuster spectacles. Reynolds remarked that "Deadpool" and "Logan" were thematically aligned during that period. He described "Deadpool" as distinctive in its approach, followed by "Logan," which he considered possibly the best comic book adaptation ever created.

Widespread critical acclaim and commercial success for more intense and successful comic book films are echoed by Reynolds' appreciation of Mangold's gritty, R-rated portrayal of Wolverine. Despite this triumph, Jackman acknowledges that, especially after hearing early criticism, he first questioned whether his character as the mutant with an adamantium clap would last.

When "X-Men" had its premiere in 2000, not many people saw superhero movies, as Jackman recounted. The film's depiction of marginalized characters connected with audiences and revitalized interest in the genre. Jackman's career soared after the movie's success despite early doubts in the industry.

Returning as Wolverine and Physical Transformation

Now, 24 years later, Jackman returns to the role in "Deadpool & Wolverine." Marvel has maintained secrecy around the movie's storyline, yet previews hint at Deadpool's interaction with the TVA and his journey through multiversal escapades. Eventually, he is set to join forces with a variant of Wolverine to face a familiar foe.

Much anticipation has been building for Jackman's return to the role, mainly because he will don the classic X-Men hero's attire. In an interview with People Magazine, Jackman discussed how physically transforming into Wolverine again proved to be the most demanding aspect of filming. Despite the initial difficulty of getting back into shape after a long hiatus from the role, Jackman found immense satisfaction once he reconnected with the character.

Jackman described his return to the role of Wolverine as enjoyable and exciting despite initial soreness in his body. He emphasized the positive impact of the physical challenges on his mental well-being. Jackman faced significant challenges in maintaining his muscular physique, which necessitated substantial dietary adjustments, especially given his naturally slender body type.

Critical Reflections on Comic Book Films

Comic book adaptations have increased dramatically during the last 20 years, mostly due to the volume of releases. Though rare in number, some truly outstanding treasures in the genre have emerged despite early misgivings.

A World of Reel article disapproved of Reynolds' statement, placing "Logan" among the top five or 10 comic book movies, reserving the highest accolade for Christopher Nolan's 2008 masterpiece, "The Dark Knight." Nolan's skill in bringing his uncompromising vision to life within the confines of a major studio distinguishes it, showcasing the peak of artistic and commercial success in comic book adaptations. Furthermore, Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 2" follows closely behind.

"Logan" is widely acclaimed among fans and critics as one of the best superhero movies in history. Reviewers gave it a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and general audience approval was slightly lower but still impressive at 90%. The film's exceptional reception led to a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2018 Academy Awards, highlighting its significant impact on the genre.
