Elizabeth Beller's New Book Explores Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and JFK Jr.'s Turbulent Love Story and Last Days

Even after many years, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy remains an intriguing figure. She died in a plane crash on July 16, 1999, along with her husband, John F. Kennedy Jr., and her sister Lauren. Despite her early death, Carolyn's influence continues, especially in fashion and social media.

In Elizabeth Beller's recent book, "Once Upon a Time," a different narrative of Carolyn emerges, challenging the negative perceptions of her as distant and aloof. Beller sheds light on Carolyn's warmth and vivacity, offering a fresh understanding of her life and legacy.

Beyond the Public Image

Beller's book offers an exclusive look into Carolyn's life and relationship with John, revealing a woman full of warmth and vitality behind the public image. Carolyn graduated with an education degree from Boston University. She then worked at the Calvin Klein boutique in Boston before relocating to New York in 1989. There, she started working in VIP sales, where she first met JKF Jr.

Carolyn epitomized a timeless American style. Amidst the diverse fashion trends of the '90s, she represented the refined taste of an independent, chic working woman. Her minimalist style sparked inspiration among stylists and designers. Her iconic wedding dress still inspires brides today.

The book highlights the relentless harassment Carolyn faced from the paparazzi, who reacted to her reserved demeanor with cruelty. Despite accusations and negative stereotypes, Carolyn was a strong, independent woman with a successful career at Calvin Klein. Her relationship with John brought immense fame but also intense media pressure.

Beller conducted thorough research and interviews with those who knew Carolyn, revealing her true personality. The book includes unseen family photos and details about her life before and during her marriage to John, presenting a well-rounded portrait of a remarkable woman.

A Turbulent Romance

In spring 1992, Calvin Klein was returning to menswear, and John F. Kennedy Jr. had an appointment for a fitting. Carolyn Bessette was chosen to assist him. John left the meeting enchanted, with a few suits and Carolyn's phone number.

John invited Carolyn to a gala dinner. Carolyn was unsure if the woman beside him was his date, and she was unhappy. However, at a fundraiser on May 18, John and Carolyn had a deep conversation at the bar, sparking a connection.

Their romance blossomed with dinners, dancing, and walks in Central Park. John brought Carolyn to his Long Island home, Sea Song. Yet, their relationship faced challenges, including a letter accusing Carolyn of being a fame-seeker. John confronted her with the letter, leaving her shocked.

Despite public scrutiny and John's visible dating history, Carolyn and John developed a deep bond. Carolyn expressed frustration that John had not introduced her to his mother, which contrasted with how she had introduced him to her family.

John called Carolyn frequently, and to make him believe she had moved on, she recorded a message suggesting she was busy and happy. This tactic only made John call more often.

On July 4, 1995, during a fishing trip to Martha's Vineyard, John proposed to Carolyn with a platinum ring. She accepted after some thought. Carolyn transformed her look and planned their wedding on September 21, 1996, on Cumberland Island, Georgia. The ceremony was intimate, with Carolyn arriving just before sunset.

After their honeymoon, the media pressure intensified. Princess Diana's death in 1997 deeply affected Carolyn, who feared for their safety due to paparazzi. Despite the challenges, John and Carolyn shared a strong bond.

In 1998, John earned his pilot's license, and although Carolyn was uneasy about flying, she often accompanied him. By the spring of 1999, they began marriage counseling. Friends had mixed impressions of their relationship, with some noting tension and others seeing happiness.

Beller's book reinforces previous accounts that John and Carolyn were a glamorous couple with a challenging relationship. According to J. Randy Taraborrelli, author of "The Kennedy Heirs," their struggles were more profound than they appeared. Despite their seemingly perfect life, they faced ordinary relationship issues under the public eye's scrutiny.

The Accident

On July 16, 1999, they planned to fly to John's cousin's wedding, taking Carolyn's sister Lauren. Despite a tight schedule, they managed to depart around 8 p.m. Carolyn called a friend to discuss Sunday dinner plans before taking off.

When they had not arrived by 10 p.m., friends began to worry. Calls were made to airports and the Coast Guard. The plane had crashed, killing all on board. At Carolyn's memorial service, a eulogy highlighted her vibrant spirit and loving nature.

"Once Upon a Time" will be released on May 21.
