Campaign Insiders Criticize Kamala Harris’ Presidential Prospects in Upcoming Book ‘The Truce’

In a book that will soon be published, "The Truce: Progressives, Centrists, and the Future of the Democratic Party," a senior campaign aide to Kamala Harris shares perspectives on her suitability as president. The aide's frank evaluation casts doubt on Harris's suitability for the presidency of the United States. Harris is the next in line to become President Joe Biden's successor should he leave office before the election.

Hunter Walker and Luppe B. Luppen's book discloses that the unnamed aide expressed a withering view of Harris' presidential capabilities after being selected as the vice-presidential candidate in 2020. The assessment suggests a sentiment within Harris' campaign that she 'should not be president of the United States.' The aide stated this sentiment is shared within the campaign staff.

"The Truce" also provides a detailed account of the Democratic Party's tumultuous half-decade. It explores the clashes between a new, progressive generation and the established centrist leadership as they adapt to maintain control.

Revisiting Harris' 2020 Campaign

Harris' 2020 presidential campaign is described in the book as having a rocky start, with the unnamed aide stating it was 'rotten from the start.' Harris withdrew her presidential bid a month before the first vote. The book quotes another senior staffer, who notes that Harris' diverse background and historic role as the first woman of color to be vice president are crucial reasons for people's support. However, the staffer emphasizes the need for Harris to substantiate her appeal with concrete plans and actions.

While Harris initially made a strong impression during the Democratic primary in 2019, landing impactful blows on Biden regarding racial integration in public schools, the book suggests that she failed to capitalize on these moments with comprehensive policy proposals.

Challenges in the Vice Presidency

Reports of tension and frustrations during her time as vice president have been circulating. However, the White House consistently denies dysfunction in her office and any strained working relationship with Biden.

The authors wrote that the problems that arose in Harris' 2020 campaign had persisted during her time as vice president. Many people left Harris' team, and those who stayed talked about a bad atmosphere with many problems and bad management. One person who worked for her did not want to discuss it publicly because it was tense. They described the experience as "Game of Thrones."

Anticipating Future Political Moves

Despite reservations regarding Biden's advanced age and Harris' dismal polling results, they are expected to lead the Democratic ticket again in the upcoming election. The book makes assumptions about Harris' prospective 2028 campaign, perhaps in tandem with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary who emerged victorious in the 2020 Iowa presidential caucus. A former staff of Buttigieg mentioned in the book a personal relationship between Harris and Buttigieg.

As the political landscape evolves, "The Truce" provides readers with a critical perspective on Harris' journey, shedding light on the challenges and complexities of her political career.
