The Nokia Lumia 920 is now up for review while new users are waiting to get their hands on the hotly anticipated Windows Phone 8.
The reviews are rather positive, with few tech websites saying anything negative about Nokia's flagship phone.
Specs
The Lumia 920 runs on Microsoft Windows Phone 8. It takes many of the physical design elements from previous generations of Lumia handsets, but improves on internal hardware and display technology. Some of the new tech specs include PureMotion HD+ 4.5 inch display (1280 x 768 resolution), Dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, NFC chip with 332ppi and Corning Gorilla Glass 2, 2,000mAh battery, and Qi wireless charging. Nokia is touting the Lumia 920′s premier feature as its new camera lens, the Carl Zeiss lens. It has rounded edges and colorful covers with a PureView camera.
Reviews
ZDNet writer Matthew Miller said that the Lumia 920 feels excellent in his hands, although the smartphone is heavier than others, weighing 185 grams.
"The PureMotion HD+ technology is pretty amazing and I recommend you test it with your fingernail or glove on. You can toggle the sensitivity in the settings if you don't need it to be so sensitive, but as winter approaches and people put on gloves this is a great feature to launch with," Miller wrote.
Miller also pointed out that "unlike Android devices, Microsoft gives you the ability to easily uninstall all the bloatware (you can later add it back in by visiting the AT&T section of the Windows Phone Store)." Another noteworthy thing is all the exclusives that come with the Lumia 920, including Nokia City Lens, Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps, and Nokia Music.
He also said "the convenience of simply dropping the Nokia Lumia 920 on the Fatboy pillow is great."
"I have to say the sensitive display, wireless charging capability, Nokia Music service, Nokia Drive software, and camera performance have been great so far," Miller concluded.
A camera review by Mashable said that almost every photo they took with the Lumia 920 was in focus despite their "often awkward shooting angles and minimal focus time." Also, unlike other smartphones, with the Lumia 920, "the camera will take a picture as soon as it achieves that focus, so you don't end up in situations where you focus on a shot only to loose that focus before you're able to hit the shutter button."
A review by PC-Tablet also gave positive reviews of the camera and the display.
"The Nokia Lumia 920 also has enhanced technological features like the polarization filter and light-sensing technology.
All these do augment viewing by regulating brightness, even in sunlight. The Nokia Lumia 920 is a fantastic device to view streaming movies, photos and browsing the Web. The display reacted perfectly to finger nail touches though the user can also use a metal stylus to operate the touch screen, you can even operate it with gloves on in winter seasons," the review said.
Also, the review said that 8.7 MP Pureview camera runs "smoothly" and that the user "need not worry about getting a shaky image while riding a vehicle because the OIS will fathom the bumps and the jerks of the journey and give you excellent and life like images." Also, the camera takes "excellent pictures in poor light."
Lumia 920 vs Nexus 4
What about the Lumia 920 vs the LG Nexus 4? Both are highly anticipated devices. The Nexus 4 runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, the latest Google Android software.
In a review by Business Insider, the Lumia 920 wins in the looks and design department because the Windows 8 phone is made from a mixture of glass, ceramic and plastic, and looks and feels solid," but it's a matter of taste.
Both phones comes with highly capable cameras but the Lumia 920 "has a number of unique camera technologies that really give it an edge."
In terms of processor, the Lumia 920's Qualcomm S4 dual-core Snapdragon processor is "slightly disappointing." The Nexus 4 features a similar S4 processor but this time with 4 cores, the review noted. About battery life, "Because the Lumia 920 is running a dual core setup, we can expect to see healthy battery life from the handset. As we are yet to really get to grips with the Nexus 4, we can only assume that the battery life will be somewhat lacklustre when compared to the Lumia 920."
Release Date
The Lumia 920 is with AT&T exclusively.
The website BGR said they confirmed with "multiple sources" that AT&T currently is planning to launch the highly anticipated Lumia 920 on Nov. 11, and that users can get it in three colors.
The Lumia 920 appeared on Best Buy last Sunday. However, the phone had been taken down. It was selling for $149.99 with a two-year contract with AT&T, which is $50 cheaper than Apple's iPhone 5. The colors were Black, Cyan, Yellow, White, and Red.
AT&T announced that the Lumia 920 and 820 is "coming soon," sometimes in November.
