Galaxy Note 2 Release Date, Specs, Sprint: Why New HTC J Butterfly Competes vs Samsung With Fast Processor, Waterproof

Samsung's Galaxy Note 2 is coming out in a few days for Sprint, Oct. 25 to be exact. Despite a lot of buzz for the new "phablet," another smartphone is coming to compete: the HTC J Butterfly.

HTC has been trying to make a comeback with its new phones, others being the HTC Windows Phone 8 and HTC One X+. The J Butterfly is also on its way.

According to Engadget, the J Butterfly will only be available in Japan through carrier KDDI. It runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with a 5-inch, 440ppi full HD "Super LCD 3" panel, which are supplied by Sharp and JDI. It has a 1.5Ghz quad-core APQ8064 processor with Snapdragon S4. It sports an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. It has 2GB RAM with 16GB internal storage with microSHDC expansion. It's also a global device with WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 (LE), NFC, LTE and CDMA/GSM/UMTS/GPRS radios. It's waterproof as well with a 2,020mAh battery.

The J Butterfly gives the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2 a run for its money.

HTCPedia writer Athanasios Zarkadas compares the two phone: "Even though the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 wins with size at 5.5inches, the HTC J Butterfly 5inch display wins with quality. The HTC J Butterfly has the new Super LCD3 with 440ppi full HD display and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has the Super AMOLED at 267ppi, not full HD. HTC may come in a bit smaller but a lot of people think that the Note series is too big. So in my opinion, HTC wins here."

The Galaxy Note 2 wins when it comes to battery.

"The 3100mAh battery in the Note 2 is so much of a better option over the 2020mAh in the HTC J Butterfly." Also, "you also have to factor in that the Butterfly comes in under 140g while the SGN 2 is 183g. That is a huge difference. Not to mention that the Butterfly is only 9mm thick." So the J is a lighter phone with pretty much the same lightening fast processor as the Note 2's Exynos 4412 Quad-core 1.6Ghz Cortex-A9.

"Both have equally good 8MP cameras but HTC has proven to have the best smartphone cameras on the market. The quality, resolution and color on HTC smartphones are incredible." Zarkadas said.

Also, the Note 2 has nothing on the J because the J is waterproof.

According to Tapscape, the J Butterfly will release in December and be available in red, white, and black.

HTCPedia said about the J's availability, "We should expect to see it everywhere. It may not have the same name but it is coming."

In another spec comparison, the Galaxy Note 2 wins.

Autoomobile reported that while the J Butterfly has a better display, the Note 2 has more storage with 16, 32, and a future 64GB model with expandable storage. The Butterfly has only 16GB. Also, the Note 2 has a better battery (also mentioned in the other comparison).

Samsung's "phablet" will feature a 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED screen and a rear 8-megapixel auto focus camera with LED flash and front 1.9 megapixel CT camera. It has a 1.6 Ghz quad-core processor and 4G LTE data speeds. It is also expected to have Android 4.1 Jelly Bean pre-installed and come with the S Pen experience and comes with up to 64GB of memory with 2GB RAM and a microSD slow up to 64GB.

Samsung will announce the availability of the Note 2 in the U.S. on Oct. 24. Carriers are expected to unveil details on their smartphones.
