'Fifty Shades of Grey' Movie Casting: Screenwriter Kelly Marcel Revealed, Details; Will Director Be 'Cosmopolis' David Cronenberg for R-Rated Film?

"Fifty Shades" fans rejoice!

Universal Pictures and Focus Features announced Oct. 8 that Kelly Marcel will write the screenplay to the highly anticipated "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie.

According to the press release, "Marcel wrote the 2011 Black List script, Saving Mr. Banks, the story of Walt Disney's twenty-year pursuit of the film rights to author P.L. Travers' novel, "Mary Poppins," and the rocky relationship that formed between the two.  The film is currently in production at Walt Disney Studios starring Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson and Colin Farrell with John Lee Hancock directing.  Marcel served as the co-creator and executive producer of the Amblin/FOX-TV series Terra Nova, for which she wrote the series' pilot episode.  She will also produce The Madonnas Of Echo Park for HBO."

"Kelly's work demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humor and depth of character which is particularly visible in the celebrated screenplay for the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks," said filmmaker Michael De Luca. "We were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelley's engagement with the characters and world E L James has created and we knew she was the right person to augment our Fifty Shades family," added Dana Brunetti.

In August, the filmmakers announced that they had narrowed it down to four front-runners for screenwriters, and Marcel was one of them. Now she has been added to "Fifty Shades" craziness.

So what is the next step?

Filmmakers and author E.L. James constantly deny rumors of who will play Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.

One time, Brunetti let the fans known on Twitter, "Cast of a film is usually decided on with a directors input..." This most likely means that everything "Fifty Shades" fans are saying are just rumors and that the crew has not picked a director, or a screenwriter for that matter.

This means that picking a director is the next step of the film adaption.

"Cosmopolis" director spoke about being a director for "Fifty Shades of Grey" in August.

"I haven't read it. It's not new," Cronenberg said in an interview with Indie Wire. "I remember 'The Story of O,' that popular French S & M novel was made into movie. It's old stuff to me in terms of subject matter. The fact that it's current and a big hit is new. Even Tony Richardson's 'Madame' had elements."

Cronenberg directed similar S&M themed movies such as "A Dangerous Method," which explores the relationship between fledgling psychiatrist Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender), his mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), the beautiful but disturbed young woman who comes between them.

Anne Thompson, the journalist who conducted the interview, suggested that Cronenberg would be a good candidate to adapt the book for screen.

He responded on the positive side, and even said that he would read "Fifty Shades of Grey" if he was presented with it.

"Focus has got the rights. I wouldn't have any qualms about it for myself. If Focus offered it to me I'd read it."

What about the rating? De Luca and Brunetti previously revealed that the film adaption would be Rated-R.

"That's correct. The challenge is similar to adapting from any medium. We're going to treat this like adapting from Ben's [Mezrich] books or any books or adapting from a play or comic book or magazine article," De Luca said in an interview, according to Fifty Shades Film. "Anything that's not film, you get into a process of adaptation, and we're just going to kind of bring the same criteria to the adaptation of this. Obviously with this, when you're dealing with something that's found such incredible mainstream success, you want to preserve everything that's wonderful about it. The success of this has certainly been breathtaking, and we're going to honor that in our quest for the perfect adaptation."

Can Marcel bring this highly anticipated BDSM-based movie to life without making it a porn film? We will see in due time.
