Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5: Samsung Dominating Display, Spec Comparisons; HTC One X+ Could Crush Galaxy S3 Competition

It looks like Samsung is winning the smartphone race against Apple's new iPhone 5.

According to PCMag, IHS reported that the Galaxy S3'S 1.1mm thickness and full 100 percent color gamut wins the match against the iPhone 5's slimmer 1.5mm display and a 72 percent color gamut.

"Having the first product with in-cell tech - or a touch panel combined with the main display - is a major achievement, according to Vinita Jakhanwal, director of IHS small and medium displays. Overall, the iPhone 5 is thinner than the Galaxy S III, and its display color gamut is more than sufficient for most people, Jakhanwal said in a statement."

However, Jakhanwal said that this won't matter to most users.

TechCrunch wrote: "In fact, IHS said that the iPhone 5′s screen may actually look better (more accurate and realistic) compared to the SGSIII, owing to "better calibration, higher brightness and superior power efficiency." Samsung's smartphone, by contrast, could appear "oversaturated and unrealistic," Vinita Jakhanwal, director for Small & Medium Displays at IHS, noted in a press release."

This doesn't faze Samsung and its flagship phone.

According to mobile analysts firm Localytics, since Aug. 1, sales of the S3 have seen average weekly growth of nine percent, followed by big spikes after the Apple lawsuit verdict and the iPhone 5 announcement, according to CNET.

In the first spike, sales jumped 16 percent from Aug. 21 to Aug. 27. The second spike was from Sept. 11 to Sept. 17 where sales jumped 15 percent.

"Even without the spikes, the S3's average weekly growth rate of 9 percent has stayed firm, which means Samsung is seeing heavy demand regardless of the iPhone 5," CNET reported.

Autoomobile did a comparison test of the iPhone 5 vs the Galaxy S3.

"In conclusion the Samsung Galaxy S3 took more points than the iPhone 5 (4 points versus 3). It beat the iPhone 5 when it came to the processor, display, connectivity and memory. However the iPhone 5 won over for its dimensions, the design and the camera. It was a draw when it came to battery life and the operating system on the handsets."

Samsung might be taking the lead when it comes to competing with Apple, however it seems a new smartphone on the market might post a big threat to the phone.

HTC finally dished on its new One X+ smartphone.

According to a press release, the new smartphone runs on HTC SenseTm 4+ experience on Android Jelly Bean. It will feature a 1.7 Ghz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 AP37 processor and 64 GB of intern storage. The LTE version will be up to 67% faster than the HTC One X1 LTE, which enables quicker web browsing, fluid gaming and graphic rendering and speedy downloads. The One X+ will also have a 2,100 mAh battery, which gives users up to 6 hours more talk time than the previous smartphone. It will also carry Beats Audio and include the Self Portrait mode on the front camera.

HTCPedia did a comparison between the Galaxy S3 and the ONE X+.

Compared to the S3's 4.8-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 720 x 1280 pixels and 306ppi, the display does not compare to the One X+'s 4.7-inch Super LCD2 capacitive touchscreen.

The Galaxy S3, however, wins the memory contest. The S3 has 1GB of Ram in the international version and 2GB in the U.S. LTE version. It also comes in three different memory sizes, up to 64GB with the option to add 64B more utilizing the microSD slot, something that the One X+ can't do.

In terms of the processors, they are completely different on each phone. The One X+ will come running with Google 4.1 Jelly Bean with HTC Sense+, while the S3 is still waiting for an update and running on Ice Cream Sandwich.

The One X+ might take the lead with the camera because of the new self-portrait feature. In terms of dimension and battery, the features are very close.

HTCPedia writer Athanasios Zarkadas concludes, "Like I said, they are both amazing smartphones but the HTC One X+ may be taking the lead. It all comes down to which OS you prefer."
