AbleNet Provides Tools to Increase Use of iDevices as Assistive Technology

ROSEVILLE, Minn. (MMD Newswire) -- AbleNet, an industry leader in developing, manufacturing and distributing assistive technology devices for those with disabilities has seen an industry shift over the past year. Consumer electronics such as Apple's iPad, iPod or iPhone, are being used more and as assistive technology solutions in the classroom, around the community and at home. Increasingly, parents see iDevices as lower-cost alternatives to some of the dedicated assistive technology on the market and schools are adopting iDevices to enhance learning in the classroom. In addition, Apple has taken the initiative to build some accessibility features such as assistive touch and voice over into its iOS 5. However, individuals with moderate to sever disabilities often need alternative means of access to use a touch screen device along with software that provides more sophisticated access options, which are not readily available at your local Apple store.

AbleNet is building on the work of Apple and delivering necessary tools for individuals with more significant disabilities to have access to iDevices. Over the past year AbleNet launched the Blue2TM Bluetooth® switch, which provides switch access to the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch and gives users access to a variety of switch accessible apps that are on the market, including AbleNet's SoundingBoardTM AAC app. AbleNet also offers HookTM, which gives users switch access to their music library on an iPod Touch, iPod Nano or iPhone.

"Consumer electronics like iPads are proving to be powerful new assistive technology options particularly when combined with technology specifically developed for people with disabilities. AbleNet is delivering essential accessories, online and on-site training, as well as professional guidance on identifying the right solutions for an individual's unique needs," said Adam Wing, Vice President of Global Business. "We are delivering solutions to easily mount the iDevice and make it switch accessible, guidance on choosing the best apps and companion tools and training so that educators can be successful. At AbleNet, we pride ourselves in being specialists on assistive technology solutions, including those that involve consumer electronics."

AbleNet will be hosting two upcoming webinars on iDevices. The first titled, Accessible iPod for Music and Audio Books in the Classroom will be held on April 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. CST. The second, Switch Access to the iPad for Communication will be held on April 17, 2012 at 11 a.m. CST. To register for either of these free webinars visit, https://ow.ly/9KzgM.
