Customers are dying to get their hands on the iPhone 5.
Pre-orders for the new smartphone started Sept. 14, Friday. However, those orders had to be pushed back because of high demand.
According to the LATimes, Just one hour after Apple began taking pre-orders for the iPhone 5 at 12:01 a.m. Friday, the company sold out of the first batch and informed later online buyers that the shipping date for the smartphone was being pushed back to Sept. 28 or later.
"The overwhelming demand, which intermittently shut down Apple's website, fueled a rally in its shares, which hit an all-time high and raised the company's market value to $648 billion. No company in history has ever been valued so high, not adjusted for inflation," the LATimes wrote.
"I've never encountered anything that sold out this fast," said Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies & Co. In comparison, Apple didn't run out of the initial launch-date inventory of the iPhone 4S until 22 hours after it began taking pre-orders last year. "We said it would be the biggest product release in consumer electronics history, but I guess we even underestimated it. It's a mania."
iPhone 5 carriers too are experiencing the same thing.
According to many reports, AT&T's website says that every configuration (the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB) of the iphone 5 will ship 14 to 21 business days, which means some orders could arrive as late as October. Verizon says that the phone will be delivered on Sept. 28.
According to Cnet, Sprint Nextel, however, isn't seeing any delays, and is promising an iPhone 5 by launch day next Friday.
While you are waiting for your new iphone, what accessories can you buy?
The Examiner reported that because of the multiple changes to the new iphone, many will need to buy new cases along with several other accessories, which include new dock cables.
Apple unveiled new earbuds, called EarPods, that are being sold separately for $29 but will be included at no extra charge with the iPhone 5.
According to Newsday, the company says the earbuds were three years in the making and required scanning hundreds of ears looking for commonalities. They are more elliptical than the current earbuds and have a smaller speaker that points into the ear canal. They also have other ports meant to maximize airflow. Also, they don't create a seal like other in-ear headphones, but Apple says the audio quality is "just as impressive as what you'd hear from more expensive headphones." Like the older versions, the EarPods come with a microphone and a remote control on the cord to adjust volume, control playback of music and movies and answer and end calls, according to Newsday.
Another accessory is that new "Lightening" port.
It's 80 percent smaller than the 30-pin connector that has been on all iPhone's ever released.
According to Newsday, It also accepts the new cord's flat connection reversibly, so you don't have to fumble with its orientation as you had to before.
Apple said that the new connector is appropriate because the iPhone 5 is thinner.
Both the EarPods and the "Lightening" connector come in white.
As for cases, some are already selling on Amazon.
The iPhone 5 will release in stores Sept. 21.
